Workshop: Modern thinking on Indian growth

This workshop examines the central puzzle of development: why do some countries remain poor while others prosper?

At independence, India had modern institutions, industrial capacity, and visionary leadership. Yet it fell behind countries like Taiwan and South Korea. This course uses economic theory, history, and policy case studies to explain why India failed to become prosperous.

Pedagogy:

The course follows a flipped-classroom model. We will provide each day’s materials—readings and videos—in advance, and participants are expected to study them before the in-person sessions. The sessions will be used to raise questions, draw connections and reflect on the ideas covered.

About the speaker:

Abhinav Singh is an educator and the founder of Polekon, an initiative that makes the difficult intellectual terrain of political economy accessible through carefully designed courses and seminars. Polekon began with a seed grant from Emergent Ventures. Previously, Abhinav led educational programs at the Centre for Civil Society and wrote unsigned editorials for Mint. He holds a Master’s degree in Behavioral and Computational Economics.

Agenda
17:00 - 18:30

What causes economic growth?

Why were societies poor for thousands of years, and what caused the dramatic rise in prosperity? If some places have become rich, why do others remain poor?

17:00 - 18:30

Why do developing countries struggle to implement growth-friendly policies?

The payoffs from adopting growth-oriented policies is huge. So why are bad policies so common? Why are inefficient systems so hard to reform?

17:00 - 18:30

Indian development strategy

After independence, India's leaders attempted a bold transformation of the economy. What were the circumstances they faced? What were their guiding principles? What were the consequences of their designs?

17:00 - 18:30

Why did the strategy fail to deliver on its promise?

In 1990, over 40 years after independence, India's economic performance was widely seen as a disappointment. We'll discuss how the policy framework of industrial, trade and agriculture policies stifled India's development, and why it matters today.

17:00 - 18:30

What did the Asian Tigers get right that India did not?

We'll contrast India's development strategy with the early developmental policies of Taiwan; one of the handful of countries that rapidly industrialized. What could India have done differently, and which lessons remain relevant today?
