This workshop examines the central puzzle of development: why do some countries remain poor while others prosper?
At independence, India had modern institutions, industrial capacity, and visionary leadership. Yet it fell behind countries like Taiwan and South Korea. This course uses economic theory, history, and policy case studies to explain why India failed to become prosperous.
Pedagogy:
The course follows a flipped-classroom model. We will provide each day’s materials—readings and videos—in advance, and participants are expected to study them before the in-person sessions. The sessions will be used to raise questions, draw connections and reflect on the ideas covered.
About the speaker:
Abhinav Singh is an educator and the founder of Polekon, an initiative that makes the difficult intellectual terrain of political economy accessible through carefully designed courses and seminars. Polekon began with a seed grant from Emergent Ventures. Previously, Abhinav led educational programs at the Centre for Civil Society and wrote unsigned editorials for Mint. He holds a Master’s degree in Behavioral and Computational Economics.
